Windsor Drop In Centre
The Windsor drop-in centre is a collaborative project jointly run by MCM and Salford Loaves and Fishes, a cross denominational group with 15 years experience of demonstrating Gods love to the homeless in Salford.
Terry Durose, Director of MCM said “We knew that God was calling us to work with homeless people again, and consultations with local church leaders confirmed to us that there was a real need for a Christian drop-in centre for the homeless in Salford. What we didn’t know was that the Salford Loaves and Fishes team were looking for a new venue. It seemed clear to everyone that God was bringing us together to serve the homeless in Salford”
As well as providing a warm meal and shower facilities, the drop-in centre offers a wide range of services to the homeless including a Doctor’s surgery, dentistry, podiatry, hairdressing, laundry, and a chance to buy good quality second hand clothes. The clients are also able to access mental health services and drug and alcohol support.
Dave Bullock is our drop-in co-ordinator, and as well as ‘working’ the shop floor in the drop-in, running Bible studies and new believers’ classes, Dave visits Forest Bank Prison. “Often, by the time people make it to the Windsor Drop-in Centre, they have already gone back on to the streets,” said Dave. “We want to make contact with people and start to help them before they become homeless.”
This project is growing well and we are seeing something in the region of 60 people a day visiting the Windsor Centre. The kitchen has recently undergone alterations (with the help of ITV’s Secret Millionaire) to make it larger and more importantly to bring it in line with the present legislation and the services on offer are growing too. We now have a garden where our clients can grow their own produce. Bulbs and plants are being bought and donated, all that’s needed now is a gardener and volunteers to help us!
StreetSoccer is now up and running in Salford and we have a knitting group once a week. Other activities on the drawing board include education services for those who need help with basic Maths and English and Art classes which can hopefully be linked in with the English course to produce a publication of some sort! We also hope to deliver our first relationship course later in the year and ‘Healthy Hips and Hearts’ is starting soon!
We now have a craft group every Wednesday who are hand making cards to sell. So if you are interested in buying some, then contact us today!!
