Team Leader – Chris

Narrowgate logoChris is a Christian and has been with the Narrowgate Night Shelter as a Team Leader since March 2010.

The following is an interview with Chris about his testimony and what volunteering with the Narrowgate Night Shelter means to him …

When did you become a Christian?

I was fortunate enough to go to an evangelical Church from childhood.  I heard the Gospel message regularly.  When I was 13 years old I  went to the Billy Graham Crusade in 1961 at Maine Road stadium in Manchester.  I realised that Jesus had died for my sins on the cross.  I went forward at the appeal and gave my life to Christ.  Following that I was baptised at Crescent Road Hall, Stockport on 1 July 1962.

Although I became a believer from my youth I think that it has taken a considerable time for me  to become  a disciple of Jesus.

What have been the highlights for you as a Christian?

It has been great to share the Gospel and see people saved by the Lord.  I have had opportunities to pray with folk and to witness God transforming and bringing healing to peoples’ lives.

Is there a particular experience that you would like to share?

Yes, during the mid 80’s and early 90’s I experienced severe depression.  I am thankful to the Lord for his faithfulness to me.  My family and Church friends were very supportive during that time.  God has said “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews chapter 13 verses 5 and 6 NIV).

What does it mean to you to be a volunteer at the Narrowgate Night Shelter?

I really value the opportunities to get alongside the homeless in order to provide assistance and support to them.  I pray that I will show something of the love of Christ to these folk.  Of course, many of them are suffering in their circumstances and so I am pleased to listen and talk to them.  It does encourage me when I know that I have helped someone to resolve their issues.  I have been invited to pray for individuals to ask God to intervene into circumstances and issues and bring His healing.  This is challenging work sometimes but rewarding, particularly when I see lives changed by God’s power.

What would you say to anyone interested in volunteering for the Narrowgate Night Shelter?

Come on down!  We do need more committed Christian volunteers who will give themselves to this project on a regular basis.  My prayer is that Christians in Manchester Churches will catch the vision for this valuable work.
